Fall Internal Audit Program Topics

  • CECL update – Now that CECL is in place, we will provide an overview and also share ideas on how to audit this estimate on your bank’s balance sheet.  
  • Regulation O – Loans to insiders  – Even though this regulation has been around for some time, banks still encounter problems with non-compliance.  We will discuss common pitfalls and how to structure your audit to find them.
  • Interest rate risk and liquidity – Banks manage interest rate risk and liquidity every day in order to meet customer needs and optimize earnings.  We will share key areas to test as part of your internal audit plan.  
  • Fair lending – Fair lending continues to be a regulatory concern.  As part of this session, we will discuss best practices and common findings to help strengthen your internal audit area.  
  • Stress Testing – Stress testing provides information to better manage your bank and identifies areas of possible weakness.  We will show you what to look for in order to help better position your bank.

About Our Presenters

G. Alan Landes, CPA, CIA | Partner – Financial Institution Services Group
Alan has over 32 years of public accounting experience, as well as work experience in the private sector in financial management. As a partner in Brown Edwards’ Financial Institution Services Group, he provides continuous support and value-added services to community banks throughout the Virginias, North Carolina, Tennessee, and Ohio.

Jason B. Ross, CPA | Partner - Financial Institution Services Group
Jason is a Partner in the Blacksburg office. He has over 20 years of public accounting experience. His focus has been providing accounting services to the financial services industry. He has worked with over 50 community banks and a number of SEC registrants ranging in size from $100 million to $3 billion. Jason has extensive experience with GAAP and SEC issues and assists clients in complex accounting issues, quarterly reviews, and with SEC filings.


Jennifer Theimer, CPA, CRCM | Director - Financial Institution Services Group
Jennifer is a director in the financial institution practice in the Roanoke office.  She assists community banks with numerous professional services including SOX reporting and compliance, internal audit, external audit, BSA validations and regulatory compliance.  Prior to joining Brown Edwards, she was the Chief Administration and Risk Officer (CARO) for a community bank for 11 years where she was responsible for managing strategic, financial and operational risks across the organization. 

Andrew Shear, CPA | Senior Manager - Financial Institution Services Group
Andrew has over 8 years of public accounting and auditing experience, with exposure to internal and external audits of financial institutions, as well as consulting engagements for financial institutions (including loan review and regulatory compliance). Prior to entering public accounting, Andrew served as the Controller of a heavy equipment leasing company in West Virginia. He held that position for two years. Andrew is a member of the West Virginia Society of Certified Public Accountants and the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants. He has also authored articles that have been included in financial institution magazines.

Lisa Gibson, CPA | Senior Associate
Lisa is a Senior Associate at Brown Edwards. She provides audit and assurance services as well as internal audit services to financial institutions in West Virginia and Virginia. Lisa graduated from James Madison University with a Bachelor of Business Administration with an emphasis in accounting in 2019. She joined Brown Edwards in 2020 and has been working with financial institutions since that time.
