A Message From The Chairman :

"To My Fellow Bankers and Friends:

2008 VACB Chairman, George LongestIt is indeed an honor to be selected by you to serve as the 2008 Chairman of the Virginia Association of Community Banks. Just fewer than twenty years ago, I began my career in a very small, community bank in Tappahannock, Virginia. I had limited knowledge of the industry but was fortunate to have a mentor who was committed to teach me everything he knew about banking. Over the years, I came to understand that we live in a state that is recognized as one of the top banking states in our nation. I am of the opinion that this legacy did not happen by chance. It is a result of the dedication and hard work of many bankers across this state assisted by associations and alliances such as the Virginia Association of Community Banks who work to promote, protect, and move our industry forward.

I believe it is important for us to step back and reflect on the tremendous responsibility that we have as community bankers. We have been fortunate in most parts of Virginia to have enjoyed a strong economy fueled by the successful activity of diversified business. Financial products combined with the knowledgeable service that we provide each day are the engine for this activity. While it is rewarding to realize that our industry plays a vital role in this success, it is also our responsibility as leaders to keep Virginia banking strong. 2007 was a tough year in terms of earnings and stock value growth and 2008 appears to be equally challenging. Fortunately, through the Virginia Association of Community Banks we can band together with a shared vision to further our industry.

One of the great benefits of this organization for me has been the friendships developed and the opportunity for networking with other bankers. When my wife, Sandy, and I attended our first convention in 1998, we knew very few people. Over the past ten years, we have forged friendships with fellow bankers and associates from across the state and even other states. This has been a tremendous personal experience for us as well as an important resource for our bank.

The success of this organization is made possible by the leadership of Pat Satterfield and her team and also by all of the bankers from across our state who volunteer their time to give back to the association and our industry. Join others in the opportunity to be involved and encourage participation within your organization. It is a great experience.

I want to take this opportunity to thank the VACB staff, Board of Directors, all of the bankers who serve in various capacities with the Association and all of our associate members who partner with us to offer cutting edge services to our customers. I congratulate the Association for celebrating 30 years of service to our industry this past year and commend all of my predecessors for the leadership you have provided to this organization.

It is my privilege to serve you and the Virginia Association of Community Banks in 2008. On behalf of Pat and her dedicated staff, I thank you for your loyalty and invite you to use our resources to support your organization.
